1000 Clean Energy Jobs Feb. 5th, 2010 @ 01:19 pm
I created 1000 Clean Energy Jobs today!

It's a bit less than the 200,000 jobs the "Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act" will create, but you gotta start somewhere.

These jobs are in the "Clean Energy" sector. Do you want a job in "Clean Energy"? Don't know if you qualify? Well, take our exam. Still don't qualify? Attend the "Clean Energy College", and in 4 short years, you will be qualified.

Wait, we don't have 4 years to wait. In the meantime, we're going to hire people from overseas.

Also, we can't actually afford to pay people today, so we're going to get grants from the Government!

Hey look, I just made 1000 jobs that YOU are going to pay for.

Storing DateTimes in Databases Oct. 4th, 2009 @ 06:25 pm
I had a discussion a while back about timezones and storing DateTimes in databases. I had wanted to standardize everything to UTC, since you lose timezone data -- is it PST or PDT? How do you convert the date if it needs to be displayed to a client not in your timezone? Well, it's come 'round, and is going to bite the ruby folks.

On a dive at BreakWater in Monterey, at the end of the pipe, in about 40' of water. I'm the diver that swims past.

Perfect Cashew Chicken Jun. 3rd, 2009 @ 05:15 pm
This Recipe makes perfect Cashed Chicken with only a couple of changes.

1. Switch Mirin for the rice wine
2. Omit all other sugar
3. Omit all salt
4. Add green onions in the last few seconds of cooking
5. I doubled almost all of the ingredients, and tripled the marinates

As the recipe mentions, the secret to really tender chicken is the 15 minutes with baking soda, which was new to me, and explains the overly tender beef and pork found in some Chinese restaurants.

Mirin is a bit sweet, so additional sugar is unnecessary, and leaving out additional salt (you get some salt from the soy sauce, and I used salted cashews), lets the taste of fresh vegetables come through. By using just enough oil to do the stir-fry, it ends up with a very clean flavor, with little of the oily nature of many fast food dishes.

» Inauguration of Obama
So, today, G.W.Bush leaves office, and B.H.Obama takes office. An historic day for many reasons, including electing the first black president.

But Obama has a lot of campaign promises to keep, part of his campaign of Change.

What are the top three things from his campaign you want to see him do, and what was the promise during the campaign? What should Obama do first?

Right now, Obama is a politician with a lot of promises to keep. But I hope he will be different.

Deadmau5 - Ghosts 'N Stuff

"At the present moment I’m not recording, I’m not on a tour, and I’ve never had a song who’s number 1 on Beatport. I’ve never been featured on JunoDownload or Trackitdown. I’ve never released vinyl but what I do know is that I’ve been listening to electronica for many years and I’ve every right to speak my mind against the fabricated music that is being released on a daily basis. It’s absolutely appalling! All these people think that if you’re on the Beatport top 10 then you’re making something out of yourself, well your making a mockery out of electronic music! I’m a producer and I come from the underground, and I’m quite frankly I’m sick and tired! And I’m here to go on these rents on messageboards because I know I’ll never amount to anything and I need to make myself feel better so when I’m not high on cocaine I will sit in front of this computer till the cows come home and continue ranting and raving about artists that are actually living out their dreams because I never will!"

» Third Hand Smoke?
I'm no fan of the smell of cigarettes, but I'm in the group that questions the harmfulness of second-hand smoke. Recent reports of the dangers of "third hand smoke" is total BS

My favorite quote:

we may next hear about the dangers of fourth-hand smoke, a term coined by John Boston of the Santa Clarita Valley Signal: someone sitting next to someone who is thinking about someone else smoking.

» GM Crops
Humans have been modifying crops for as long as there has been agriculture. This article talks about changes to turkeys, corn, and potatoes.

Also, the fifth taste, umami.
» Application Security
There have been a number of recent reports of break-ins to popular Web2.0 sites. These security measures/suggestions are something I've been talking about for some time now. Twitter broke rule one. Do you?
